Proteins contained in the Pollen

Original in Spanish

In this Espacio Apícola issue, besides that enunciated in this electronic summary, we publish all the melissopalynology abstracts that will be presented in the Río Cuarto Api-Expo from May 9th to 11th. They are very important for our honey quallity determination. But related to this other investigation line, they acquire much more importance, not only about the human feeding insidence of the pollen, but in the first role of the same one in the bees nutrition.

EDITOR WORDS
Toward the Río Cuarto Api-Expo 2003

Dear readers, we arrive with delay because we were regarding the dates of the possible one "second electoral turn" verifying, through the "Electoral National Chamber", that the same ones are not superimposed with the date of our "XIth Fairs and Beekeeping Meeting of the Republic Centre" that we had announced one year ago.
We also await to the reception of the abstracts that different professionals have sent us to present their works in the "Argentine Beekeeping Regions Meeting" that will be carried out in the same Meeting.
About this we are proud to offer in this "Espacio Apícola" issue an advance of such a hierarchy, because we don't doubt that the same one will help to participate in the presentation of this works, giving us enough elements to make questions that we believe convenient during the exhibitions of the investigators and beekeepers that participated of the same ones previously.
Also, the fact of having exhibitions referred to more than 60% of the bees interest flora of the country, it constitutes a tool of great value for those that are evaluating to move to other regions or to modify the routes of their moving practice.
As you leave, the investigations, searching the products quality differentiation and determination of the floral origin of the same ones, doesn't point to find an occasional bigger added value of the product only, but rather it offers us important elements to give continuity of nutritional contribution to our dear bees in face of the risks to that, the current cultivation systems, exposes to the ecosystem and our activity. In this way Pablo Faye's works is to read them with a lot of attention.
The Varroa Control article importance, it will be valued without a doubt by all, as well as the practical aspects that Manuel Oliver refreshes us, with whom also hope to meet during the Río Cuarto Api-Expo 2003.
The programme of the exhibition will be available at the end of April and our next number 57 will be distributed starting from the date of the expo, because it contains articles that will be indexed by some of the lecturers. It will be until then. It will be a pleasure to meet you in Río Cuarto!.

Protein content in the Pollen pellets Originated in the Southeast of Córdoba
Ms. Cs. Pablo F. Faye
Agronomy School of the National University of Córdoba - Argentina
pfaye@agro.uncor.edu
The protein content and consequently the nutritious value of the pollen differs according to its floral origin and according to the years and times of each year.
This has important consequences so much for the beekeeper like for the nutritionist that recommends the pollen consumption to their pupils.
Starting from the publication of this work, we have a scientific tool, valid in our means, to evaluate the advantages or not of some blossoms, not only for the nectar contribution but also for the protiens; it's a tool to know why, in some regions, the brood development is quicker than in other, the variability in oneself region according to the season and finally it introduces us in the necessity of also differentiating the floral origin of our pollen and the future incidence of the same one in the interest of the market.

ABSTRACT
The protein content in pollen pellets made by the honeybees (Apis mellifera L.) was settled down in this work. The sampling was made in a representative apiary of the region during the periods Sep./98 - March/99 and Sep./99 - March/00. It could determine that the protein content in the unifloral pellets was included between 10.57% and 31.43%. Also, the percentages in the global samples varied among 19 to 28% according to the month and examined year.

The publication includes the charts, the bibliography and the results of the 22 more representative species of the studied area

Varroa Control - Some Alternatives.-
Martin Javier Eguaras
Arthropods Laboratory - National University of Mar del Plata - Argentina

Testing the varroa control in Mar del Plata, Buenos Aires province, Argentina
RESULTS AND COMMENTS ABOUT SOME VARROA CONTROL ALTERNATIVES

An alternative to the synthetic acaricides is the use of natural substances. These ones are good for varroa control and don't incorporate strange elements in the beehive products. It can be considered:
a) the timol, a majority component of the essential oil of the thyme (Thymus vulgaris),
b) the rotenona, a well-known active ingredient used to different plagues control, it has also been of interest against varroa and,
c) the formic acid, one of the good known natural substances and used to varroa control.
This work was done like a review about the effectiveness of these substances controling Varroa in colonies with breeding during different months.
The article compares and it evaluates the rehearsals carried out with the three active principles with its respective conclusions and use recommendations.

QueenBees Breeding: The debate, Cross or Pure? - Guillermo Stevenazzi - Santa Fe - Argentina

In the Argentina there is a strong tendency to use pure honeybee races, especially the Apis mellifera ligustica for the region of the Humid Pampas. However, besides the defense of the Creole bee (Apis mellifera mellifera) there are people who speak about the hybridization necessity.
Guillermo Stevenazzi's note is an opinion in this debate, since he would produce Italian Queenbees in a place with carniolan honeybee drones.
